The Scenic Route: Why We’re Falling in Love with Rail Travel

Carly Faghy • January 15, 2026

In our quest to see more of the world, we’ve accidentally stopped actually looking at it.

We’ve all become experts at the "hop", that disorienting leap from an airport lounge in one city to a taxi rank in another. We’ve been conditioned to think that the faster we get somewhere, the more "holiday" we have. We wake up at 3:00 AM, navigate the fluorescent-lit chaos of airport security, and spend hours in a cramped seat just to "save time."

But by the time we actually hit the beach or the mountains, we’re so frazzled we spend the first two days just trying to remember how to relax!

What if the travel itself became the experience? Imagine exploring the whole of Italy or the Canadian Rockies stress-free—no maps, no city traffic, and no white-knuckling the steering wheel thinking, "I need a holiday to recover from this holiday."

Here’s why rail is, quite possibly, the most rewarding way to see the planet:

1. A Front-Row Seat to the "In-Between

When you fly, you see clouds. When you drive, your eyes are on the bumper in front of you. But on a train, every window is a moving gallery. You get a "viewfinder" into landscapes that roads simply don't reach (think: hidden alpine valleys, remote coastal stretches, and tiny mountain villages that don’t have an airport code).

Our Insider Tip: Keep your camera ready! You’ll glide past backcountry views that’ll have your friends asking, "How on earth did you get that shot?"

2. Reclaiming the "Gift of Time"

We always talk about "saving time," but there’s a massive luxury in actually spending it. On a train, you’re granted the gift of hours to yourself. You can finally finish that book, enjoy a long, proper lunch in the dining car (with a real glass of wine!), or just watch a continent shift from green to gold outside your window.

Whether it's the Swiss Alps or the plains of the Outback, there is something deeply restorative about watching the world go by at its own pace. You arrive feeling like you’ve actually seen the country, rather than just skipped over it.

3. City centre to City centre (The Ultimate Life-Hack)

One of the best-kept secrets of rail travel? Convenience. Forget the hour-long, expensive taxi rides from remote airports. Most iconic rail journeys drop you right in the heart of the action. You step off the platform and you’re often just a short stroll from your hotel and a local espresso. No baggage carousels, no shuttle buses, just a seamless transition into your adventure.

4. A Meaningful Connection

There’s a romance to rail that a budget airline just can’t replicate. It’s the social atmosphere of the lounge car, the rhythmic "thrum" of the tracks, and the sense of truly moving through a landscape. It turns travel from a logistical hurdle into one of the best memories of the trip.

Plus, for the conscious traveller, it’s one of the kindest ways to see the planet. You can enjoy those pristine mountain views knowing you're helping keep them that way.

Europe by Rail: The Ultimate Cross-Border Adventure

Possibly one of the best things about Europe is the sheer scale of it and the ability to hop from one country to another in a single afternoon. But let’s be honest, doing it yourself can feel overwhelming. The tickets, the transfers, the "when's" and the "where's" can get complicated quickly.

That’s where having dedicated experts involved makes the difference. We take the hassle out of the logistics so that you can actually enjoy your time. Rail travel should be as smooth as the tracks.

So, why a Rail Holiday Vacation?

The flight gets you to the country, but the train shows you the soul of the place. Here’s why the smartest travellers are slowing down:

  • Arrival without the "Noise": There is no better feeling than pulling into a city centre, stepping off the platform, and being ten minutes from your hotel.

  • The Luxury of Doing Nothing: In a world that demands 24/7 productivity, the train is a sanctuary. It’s a place where "doing nothing" is actually the point.

  • A Shared Front-Row Seat: Unlike driving, where one person is focused on the road, a rail journey is a collective experience. Everyone gets to experience the "wow" moment at the exact same time.

We’re back with another USA blog as part of our FIFA World Cup 26 series. This week, while Las Vegas isn’t actually hosting any matches, we’re seeing plenty of fans adding it into their US trips — and it’s easy to see why. Las Vegas is one of those destinations that doesn’t really need an introduction, but we’ll give it one anyway. This is the city where an Eiffel Tower stands next to a pyramid. Where breakfast at 2pm is completely normal. Where you can watch world-class shows, take a gondola ride through Venice, stand beneath dancing fountains, and try your luck in a casino… all without leaving the Strip. It's loud. It's over the top. It's completely bonkers. And that's exactly why people love it. First things first, let’s get the stereotype out of the way. Yes, Las Vegas is known for hen dos, stag parties and group weekend getaways. But Vegas isn’t selective — it really does have something for everyone. Whether you’re planning the ultimate hen party, a family trip, a couples getaway, or even a solo adventure, Las Vegas works in more ways than people expect. So with that in mind, here are our must-do experiences for your first visit.

Ready for your latest USA instalment as part of our FIFA World Cup 26 series? This week we’re heading to one of the most iconic cities in the world as England prepare to take on Panama on 27th June. Of course, we’re talking about New York City. New York doesn’t really need an introduction. Even if you’ve never been, you already know it — you’ve seen it in films, on TV, in adverts, and probably scrolling Instagram at 2am when you start planning trips you haven’t actually booked yet. Times Square, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, Broadway, yellow taxis everywhere… it’s one of those cities that feels familiar before you even arrive. But here’s the question we get asked all the time as travel agents: "When is the best time to visit New York?" And honestly? It's a difficult one to answer. Summer in New York is absolutely unreal. Rooftop bars packed, outdoor events everywhere, Central Park in full swing, street performers, long evenings where you lose track of time just wandering around. But then winter rolls in… And suddenly New York turns into something else entirely. It’s the New York you've seen in the films. Christmas lights everywhere. Ice skating in Central Park. Markets in Bryant Park. Fifth Avenue looking like a film set. It’s very “Home Alone 2 energy” if we’re being honest. So rather than picking a winner, we've decided to do something a little different. We've put together two perfect three-day itineraries – one for a summer visit and one for a winter city break. Same New York. Completely different vibe.

If you’ve been to Constantinou Bros Asimina Suites Hotel before, you’ll already know how special it is. And if it’s been on your list for a while, now might be the perfect time to go. The hotel officially reopened on 2nd May 2026 after a six-month refurbishment, and one of our team (Carly from head office) was lucky enough to spend a week there straight after reopening to see what’s changed. It’s always really important that our agents know hotels inside and out, so that you can trust they know what they are talking about when they make recommendations for your holiday.

And, with England taking on Croatia on the 17th June, there’s no better time to talk about one of America’s true sports cities.

Roses are red, violets are blue, no matter what you're looking for, we have a holiday for you.... We had to put a cheesy line in here somewhere… But, we often fall into the trap of a ‘classic romance.’ Don’t get us wrong some of us are secret cringy romantics at heart. Whether you are planning a Valentine’s Day trip, a long-overdue anniversary escape, or maybe the perfect proposal spot… we’ve curated a list of the best romantic holiday destinations for 2026.
