Where is Costa de Almeria?
Costa de Almeria sits in the far southeast of Spain, tucked between the better-known Costa del Sol to the west and the Costa Blanca to the north. It's part of Andalusia — the same region as Seville and Granada — but feels a world away from the busier stretches of the Spanish coast. The landscape here is dramatic and largely unspoilt, with golden beaches backed by rugged mountains and the vast Cabo de Gata natural park protecting miles of coastline from development.
Flying in is straightforward. Almeria Airport (LEI) receives direct flights from several UK airports and puts you on the coast within minutes of landing. Malaga Airport is a popular alternative if you can't get a direct flight to Almeria itself — it's around a two-hour drive along the coast, which many of our clients combine with a stop in the charming town of Nerja along the way.
What sets Costa de Almeria apart from the Costa del Sol is space. The resorts here are quieter, the beaches less crowded, and the towns retain a genuinely Spanish feel that's becoming harder to find further west. If you've done Marbella and Benalmadena and want something a little more relaxed and authentic, Almeria tends to be the answer.
Where to stay in Costa Almeria
Costa Almeria offers a superb choice of accommodation options, catering for all budgets.
You can find a wide selection of hotels in Roquetas de Mar, Mojacar and El Toyo. Families are well catered with great children’s facilities at a number of beach front properties.
Almeria Holiday Resorts
Roquetas de Mar
The largest resort on the Costa de Almeria, Roquetas de Mar is a firm favourite with British and Spanish holidaymakers alike. It's built around a long, gently shelving sandy beach that's ideal for families, with a good spread of hotels, restaurants and evening entertainment within easy walking distance. The town has a charming old harbour area worth exploring on an evening stroll, and the warm, sheltered bay makes it one of the best spots on this stretch of coast for swimming.
Mojacar
Mojacar is really two places in one. The original hilltop village — Mojacar Pueblo — is a beautiful cluster of whitewashed houses and narrow lanes perched above the surrounding plains, with panoramic views that make it worth the short drive up from the coast. Down below, Mojacar Playa stretches for several kilometres of fine sandy beach lined with hotels and beach bars. It's particularly popular with those who want a bit of culture alongside their sun and sand, and the area has a long-standing reputation as an artists' retreat.
Carboneras
For something a little more off the beaten track, Carboneras delivers. Smaller and less developed than the other resorts, it sits right on the edge of the Cabo de Gata natural park — a protected area of volcanic coastline, hidden coves and crystal-clear water that feels genuinely wild. Snorkelling and walking are popular here, and the seafood in the local restaurants is as fresh as it gets. If peace and quiet is what you're after, Carboneras is hard to beat.

When to Go to Almeria
Costa de Almeria has one of the sunniest climates in Europe, which means there's genuinely no bad time to visit — but better times are depending on what you're after.
April and May are excellent for those who prefer warmth without the intensity of midsummer. Temperatures sit comfortably in the low-to-mid twenties, the beaches are quiet, prices are lower, and you'll find the natural parks and hilltop villages like Mojacar at their most enjoyable.
June through August is peak season. July and August bring temperatures regularly above 35°C, and the coast fills up with Spanish families on their own summer holidays — the atmosphere is lively, and the sea is at its warmest, but book well in advance and expect higher prices.
September and October are arguably the best months of all. The summer crowds thin out, temperatures drop to a mor
e comfortable 25–30°C, and the sea retains all the warmth it's built up over summer. Late September in Almeria often feels like a British July, but with better beaches and cheaper hotels.
November to March is quiet. It won't be sunbathing weather, but daytime temperatures in the mid-teens make it a pleasant escape from a British winter, and a number of our clients use this period for walking holidays in Cabo de Gata when the trails aren't baked dry.
