Things to do in Oman

Explore Muscat

Oman's capital is a great introduction to the country. Muscat feels very different from cities such as Dubai or Abu Dhabi. It's more relaxed, traditional and understated, with low-rise white buildings surrounded by rugged mountains.



Visit the magnificent Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, explore the colourful Mutrah Souq, wander along the Corniche and visit the city's historic forts.

Swim in Oman's Wadis

One of the biggest surprises for first-time visitors to Oman is just how beautiful its wadis are. These natural valleys and pools cut through the mountains, creating some incredible places to swim and cool off.



Wadi Bani Khalid is one of the most accessible and popular, with clear turquoise pools surrounded by dramatic scenery.

Spend a Night in the Desert

Head into the Wahiba Sands, where huge golden dunes stretch as far as you can see. You can explore by 4x4, try dune bashing, ride camels or simply watch the sun disappear over the dunes.



Stay overnight in a desert camp and experience the incredible silence and clear night skies before waking up to sunrise over the sand.

Visit the Hajar Mountains

Oman's mountains are spectacular and make the country particularly good for a self-drive holiday. The Hajar Mountains rise dramatically from the surrounding landscape, with winding roads, deep valleys and traditional villages dotted throughout.



One of the highlights is Jebel Akhdar, known for its dramatic mountain scenery and cooler climate. It's also possible to visit Jebel Shams, home to some of the country's most spectacular viewpoints.


Best Time To Visit Oman


The best time to visit Oman is generally October to April, when temperatures are much more comfortable for exploring, sightseeing and outdoor activities.

The winter months from November to March are particularly popular, with warm days and cooler evenings. Summer can be extremely hot, particularly away from the coast, so it's generally not the ideal time for a sightseeing-heavy Oman holiday.

If you're travelling specifically for the beaches, winter offers a fantastic combination of warm weather and comfortable temperatures.

    Oman is a relatively conservative country, so visitors should dress respectfully, particularly when visiting mosques, villages and other religious or traditional areas. Swimwear is appropriate at hotel pools and beaches, but more modest clothing should be worn away from resort areas.
