Holidays to Madeira

Madeira is an attractive Portuguese island situated in the north Atlantic. Madeira holidays offer an exceptional year round climate and an extraordinarily varied lush and beautiful landscape giving it the name as the 'floating garden' of Europe.

Although part of Portugal, Madeira is actually considerably nearer to Africa than Lisbon. In general, Madeira has a very temperate climate all year round as the temperature rarely dips below 18°C.

Between February and March the Carnival takes place with events happening all over the island. There are a number of processions through Funchal – including one day when the public are invited to dress up and join in.

The Flower Festival is during April. Madeira is famous for its flowers and during these two days decorated floats travel through the town of Funchal. The Atlantic Festival runs through June and is a mix of classical concerts and firework displays that take place over four weekends. It is traditional for other countries to organise the Saturday fireworks in a competition to decide who gets to preside over the New Year celebrations.

Funchal is located in a natural rock amphitheatre that rises from the harbour and gently up the hillside slopes. Definitely the centre of Madeiran activity, a holiday to Funchal has all the amenities you'd expect from a friendly and cosmopolitan resort including boutiques, markets, restaurants, cafes and bars.

Canico is a laid back town where the Old Town is a tree-lined main square surrounded by a cluster of sleepy atmospheric streets, while the newer part of town stands on the cliff-tops with commanding views over the sea.

Machico offers a beautiful beach with excellent swimming and sunbathing - great for those on a family holiday to Madeira.
